Camino Kitlist: What to Pack for Your Pilgrimage

Updated: Jan 10, 2023

Planning to walk one of the fabulous variations of the Camino de Santiago? Worried about what equipment and clothing you're going to need? Well, you're in the right place, we'll outline the essentials below so you can book with peace of mind!

Footwear

Arguably the most important decision you'll make when preparing to commence your Camino journey. Of course, all of the advice given here will be dependent on the variation and time of year you decide to begin your trek.

When hiking in Ireland, the general advice is always to opt for waterproof above all else, however, if you're heading out to complete the Camino in the summer, it is best to focus on the breathability of the shoe or boot's fabric as you will be covering a large distance in what at times can be quite unforgiving heat. Whether you go for high tops or a trail shoe, is a question of personal preference, but above all else, be sure to break the shoe in well before you take off. Comfort is key here.

Rucksack

You'll be needing a backpack throughout your hike, and as with footwear, comfort and a good fit are paramount. You shouldn't need much more than a 30-litre rucksack for your journey, and for some this will even be too much, depending on your chosen accommodation and trail. When choosing your backpack, be sure to go into your local outdoor store and try on the different brands and models to see what best suits your physiology. The following are some key points to bear in mind when choosing:

Weight

Don't carry extra weight unless you absolutely must, some older models of backpacks have heavier frames that will add significant and unnecessary weight to your pack.

Functionalities

Waist straps on a rucksack are an important attribute to look out for. They help spread the load of the bag across the hips and shoulders, easing strain and allowing you to carry on for longer as well as reducing the chance of injury.

Fit

When trying on different potential packs for your Camino holiday, be sure to check for these tell-tale signs that the pack is right for you. Most hiking-specific backpacks are crafted with different size frames to suit both the taller and smaller hiker. When fitting your rucksack, begin fastening straps at the hips. Ensure that the waist straps are sitting comfortably on your hip bones and once adjusted comfortably, move upwards to the shoulder straps and lid of the bag. If after adjusting from the waist up, the shoulder straps sit snuggly in line with your shoulders and back (without a raised gap in between) then you are good to go!

Poles or No Poles?

Poles are often an individual choice or personal preference. There are very few sections of the Camino that truly require the use of poles and our guides do not see them as being essential kit. Of course, if you are used to using poles then bring them along, particularly if crossing the Pyrenees section of the French Way.

Clothing

Smart layering will be important here, based on where and when you are hiking. To pack light, add two sets of t-shirts and trousers, three pairs of underwear and socks, one warm jumper, and a reliable raincoat. If you're heading off during the summer, it's not a bad idea to add in a swimsuit for those hotter days!

Sleeping Arrangements

How you pack will of course depend on where you plan to sleep throughout your trek, whether that be hotels or hostels. Most of the hostels will provide quilts, in which case you can just pack a sleeping liner for the quilt, alternatively, you can pack your sleeping bag to cover all bases.

Getting Prepped!

As with all active holidays, one of the best things you can do to prepare is to get physically fit and ready for your journey. Make sure to get plenty of hiking in of different gradients so you're feeling strong and ready! Our guides and partners recommend, as a minimum, 40 minutes of aerobic type exercise (running, swimming, biking, hill walking, or gym work) two to three times per week for two to six months leading up to your departure!
