Every year, São João festival takes place in Porto on the night of the 23rd to the 24th of June. It is the most anticipated event by both locals and visitors, and can also be a day of an unexpected headache, due to the high chance of getting hit in the head with a toy hammer at any moment throughout the night.. so beware!
This is a night full of traditions, where the sky is covered with large, paper lamps, families and friends gathered in celebration, and traditional foods like grilled sardines, "Caldo Verde," (traditional Portuguese soup) and "bifanas," (pork sandwiches) are served with red wine, Super Bock (local beer), and, of course, a fine port wine for dessert. All of these delicious foods are ready and available at all of the restaurants along Porto's vibrant streets.
After dinner, it's time to see an incredible display of beautiful fireworks by the Luis I bridge, which begins precisely at midnight. To get the best view, we would advise going early to pick your ideal spot.
Next up on the schedule is a night of beautiful music. The concerts will take place in three different locations: Largo Amor de Perdição; The Palácio de Cristal Gardens & The Casa da Música.
