Top Tips for Family Ski Holidays

Ski holiday are the perfect family getaways, from watching the kids hit the slops for the first time, to cosy nights by a warm fireplace with a hot chocolate in hand. Planning your first family ski holiday can seem like a daunting task, but our guide to the top tips will make planning your amazing holiday a breeze. From where to stay to what to pack this guide will ensure you & your family have the best holiday on the slopes.

What to wear?

Brand new ski gear can be quite expensive, especially for a first-time holiday. For your first family holiday to the slopes, we suggest asking friends or family who regularly go skiing to borrow their gear or hitting second-hand stores! If that fails, supermarkets such as Lidl & Aldi often do special buys of ski gear, be quick though these tend to sell out very quickly!

► Skis, poles & helmets will be available to rent from the resorts, but below are some items that we think are a must when going on a ski holiday!

► Warm, waterproof outerwear such as a snowsuit is essential

► Layers! Although your snowsuit will do most of work, you need to have extra layers to beat the cold. Thermal leggings & fleeces are factasic!

► Sunglasses or goggles. Although freezing, the sun can hit those slopes and can strain the eyes!

► Ski socks. Absolutely nothing worse than feeling like your toes are going to fall off from the cold but a few pairs of good thick ski socks will have your feet nice & toasty all day!

► Boots. While you can rent boots at some ski resorts, it’s so handy to have your own pair for when you’re not skiing. Moonboots are all the range now and are easily available on ASOS! We recommend leaving the runners at home, the slush & snow will ruin them!

► Small rucksack to keep water & snacks with you while you’re out skiing. Try to get one that moulds well to your body & big enough for all your stuff.

► Sun cream & lip balm. Yes, we know these are usually associated with sun holidays, but as we said earlier, ski resorts see a lot of sun exposure so its important to get your SPF topped up.

When to go

Because of school calendars, Christmas, New Years, Easter & mid-term are always the busiest times to go on a ski holiday, and usually prices will reflect that. Ideally head during January & March. March tends to be better for kids as the days are longer. However, we know that sometimes you have to go during school holidays. All Inclusive, B&B and Self-Catering; which is best?

This can be dependent on your budget. All inclusive will obviously bring up the price of your holiday while self-catering will keep the price lower

All-inclusive can be the easier option as you don’t need to worry about finding restaurants to eat in and you can enjoy the comfort of your resort.

B&B gives you freedom to choose what you what for lunch & dinner and allows you to quickly get up & eat early so you can have more time on the slopes.

Self-catering can keep costs low. There are supermarkets dotted around resorts for you to stock up on food.
